ScholarWorks Policies
MSU repository Collection Development Policy
ScholarWorks
In line with the mission of the library, to facilitate student and faculty success by providing access to information and knowledge, ScholarWorks will collect the scholarly works of Montana State University researchers and affiliates and provide access to those items freely. Submit your article or paper to ScholarWorks.
Purpose
ScholarWorks aims to collect the scholarly works of faculty, staff and graduate students affiliated with MSU. Scholarly works from undergraduate students which meet the Repository guidelines will be considered individually, as determined by the repository manager. ScholarWorks will also accept materials produced by non-university researchers and collaborators that are produced in conjunction with an MSU-related events and activities. In these cases, each author or contributor must agree to the submission of their material.
Access
ScholarWorks is a tool that is open to the public and as such is accessible by search engines and through its own interface to as wide an audience as possible. This includes web optimization, preservation, migration and proper structuring of ScholarWorks and the items it holds, and their descriptions. See our Accessibility Policy for more information on Accessibility.
Copyright
The repository manager will assess materials for copyright status or answer any copyright questions. Contact https://ask.lib.montana.edu/ with questions or to set up an appointment.
Any author publishing work in ScholarWorks must either have copyright for the work or the permission of the copyright holder to publish it in the repository. Many publishers will allow authors to archive a copy of an article (or other works) in an institutional repository as a form of "self-archiving". Interested authors can use their article DOI to discover reuse rights through our share your paper page, search for a particular journal and its policies at https://openpolicyfinder.jisc.ac.uk/, or ask the library for assistance.
Selection Criteria
ScholarWorks will accept work from Montana State University researchers and affiliates who own the copyright to that work or the permission of the copyright holder to archive it in the repository. Many digital formats will be accepted, though some may be migrated for preservation and continued access. Abstracts and citations will not be accepted by themselves, except with special permission from the repository manager. Any scholarly item may be considered for archiving in ScholarWorks with preference given to articles, theses and dissertations, professional papers, working papers, conference proceedings, presentations, book chapters, scholarly blogs, and other published materials.
Research Data
ScholarWorks does not archive data. For MSU policy on data management, storage, and discovery, please reference our Research Data Services pages.
Deletion
The repository is intended to be a permanent scholarly record. Withdrawing content is strongly discouraged. However, legal issues, plagiarism, breaches of confidentiality, or other considerations may necessitate content withdrawal. Authors will be notified by the repository administrator before removal of any content. Authors wishing to remove or update their content should contact the repository manager through https://ask.lib.montana.edu/.
