Purpose: Equal Access to Internet and Technology

About: The MSU Library understands the importance of equal access to internet and technology. The library's technology lending service provides a free option for MSU Students and employees to borrow a variety of items, including laptops, charging cords, and Wi-Fi hot spots. This service helps support equal access and helps bridge the digital divide by providing technology to users who do not have access due to affordability, availability, or additional reasons.

MSU Library Tech Checkout Policies

Who Can Borrow

• Students, Staff and Faculty: Need your Cat Card (MSU ID) or a valid government photo ID (Driver's License, Passport, etc.)
• Community Members: Can borrow Basic Headphones or Citizen Science Kits with a Montana Resident Courtesy Borrower Card
• Please Note: We lend to individuals only. We do not lend to organizations, units, or departments. We are not a fee-based rental service for events

Tech Borrowing Policies

• Loan Durations: All items are available for short-term checkouts due to the limited number of items, and we want to maximize availability for all users to promote equal access
• One item per type: You can check out 1 laptop, 1 camera, etc. at a time
• All items: First come, first served - no reservations or holds available for Tech Items
• No back-to-back checkouts or renewals: Can't immediately re-borrow the same device (but you can get a different copy of one if available)
• High Value Equipment: You will be asked to read and sign a “Tech Checkout Use Agreement” form the first time you checkout a high value item each semester. The form is kept on file at the Library Service Desk and a blank copy is available for personal records upon request

Returning Items

• Return location: Bring items inside to the Library Service Desk
• Important: Don't use the outside book drop when the library is closed, this can damage the tech equipment
• Your data: Save and delete your content from any tech equipment; MSU Library is not responsible for your content and will delete anything on the equipment upon return

Your Reponsibilities

• Return items by their due date: Your assistance in returning your borrowed items on time is much appreciated so that others can use the benefits of the library as you have
• Follow all laws and Montana State University policies when using equipment
• Damage/Lost fees: You are responsible for replacement costs plus a $25 processing fee for any damaged or lost items

Liability

Citizen Science Kits

MSU Library is partnering with MSU Science Math Resource Center to provide Citizen Science kits and other equipment to all MSU Library users, including community borrowers.

A citizen science kit holds everything needed to gather data for a specific citizen science project. Each kit was field-tested by librarians and patrons and includes a printed activity guide, helpful tips, and any specialized tools or materials needed to complete the project.

Libraries across the country are circulating citizen science kits and other equipment, hosting events, and collaborating with their communities to enable participation in citizen science. The kits and other equipment below were selected and procured by MSU's Science Math Resource Center using funds from an NSF EPSCoR grant.

Light Therapy Lamps

According to the Mayo Clinic, a light therapy box mimics outdoor light. It's thought that this type of light may "cause a chemical change in the brain that lifts your mood and eases other symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), such as being tired most of the time and sleeping too much.” Recommended daily usage is 15 minutes.
