Library Accounts and Passwords
How Do I Log In to Library Accounts?
- Use your MSU NetID and Password
- -or- use your MyPortal username and password
- -or- use your Banner ID and library password
Library Accounts are used for:
- ILL: Interlibrary Loan requests for books, articles, and other materials we do not have
- Catalog: Renewing, placing holds, and viewing books checked out in our online catalog
- Proxy: Off-campus access to our databases and journals and electronic reserves (proxy access)
- Reserve Submission: For instructors only, use it to submit items for reserves
Using Your NetID for Library Accounts
- You can now use your MSU NetID for ALL library account services: proxy, catalog, ILL, and reserves submission
- Your NetID looks like a12b345
- Set your NetID password with the MSU Password Reset form.

Or Use Your MyPortal User Name & Password
- Portal user name looks like first.last
Or Use Your Library Password
- Use your 8 digit Banner ID number with no dash
- Also called CAT Card number, Student ID, GID, etc.
- Be sure to use all 8 digits (no dash or other punctuation)
- Example: 01234567
Need a Library Password?
- Request a new library password
- You'll get an email at your official MSU email address with a link to click to set your new password.
Library Password Rules
- At least 6 and no more than 10 characters
- Must have at least 1 letter and 1 number
- Letters and number only; No special characters allowed
- Case Sensitive: 93notFUN is different than 93notfun
Request a Proxy Account
- Only needed if neither the NetID or Banner ID work -- no registration is required for most MSU affiliates. If you are not successful logging in to library resources or do not have a Banner/CatCard Number, then you should apply. Otherwise, your account is already in the system by virtue of being a student or employee of MSU.
- In accordance with our licensing agreements for databases and journals, only Montana State University Faculty, Staff, Students, and legal affiliates as determined by the Provost's office are eligible for this service!
- To apply, submit the Proxy Account Application form.
