Collection 2231 - Aubrey L. Haines Papers, 1952-1976

Creator: Haines, Aubrey L.

Provenance Note: Literary manuscripts, research materials, and papers created or collected by Aubrey L. Haines were donated to Special Collections by Mr. Haines on May 31, 1984.

Historical Note: Aubrey L. Haines was born in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from the University of Washington with a degree in forestry, he was employed as a park ranger in Yellowstone National Park. Following four years of service with the United States Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, he returned to Yellowstone and, in 1946, was appointed assistant park engineer. In 1959, he was promoted to the newly-created position of Park Historian, remaining in that post until he retired in 1969. Mr. Haines has written many articles and books, including Yellowstone National Park: Its Exploration and Establishment for the YNP centennial. Two edited works, The Valley of the Upper Yellowstone and Osborne Russell's Journal of a Trapper, made key Rocky Mountain histories available with new introductions and notes. The Yellowstone Story represents the fullest history of the Park published to date. Mountain Fever is devoted to the early history of Mount Rainier National Park. Since his retirement, Mr. Haines has served as a consultant on historical research for the National Park Service and the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.

Content Description Note: The Aubrey L. Haines papers are primarily literary manuscripts, drafts, proof sheets, research notes, and related correspondence pertaining to five of his major publications: Yellowstone National Park: Its Exploration and Establishment (1974); The Valley of the Upper Yellowstone (1965); Osborne Russell's Journal of a Trapper (1955); The Yellowstone Story (1977); Mountain Fever (1962). Included are photographs used in the preparation of Mountain Fever. The collection has been arranged in five series, each pertaining to one of the five aforementioned works.
