Creator: Franklin D. Roosevelt Library

Provenance Note: The Burton K. Wheeler documents from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, President's Personal File Number 723, were purchased from the FDR Library in August, 1990.

Historical Note: Senator Burton K. Wheeler (1882-1975) was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1922. Shortly after taking office he became the subject of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, probably as a reaction to his own investigations of the Bureau. Chairman of the Interstate Commerce Committee and of the Indian Affairs Committee, Wheeler personally influenced such key New Deal legislation as the Public Utilities Holding Company Act of 1935 and the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934 (the Wheeler-Howard Act).

Content Description Note: The documents in this collection were photocopied from originals which are held by the FDR Library within the 608 feet of material cataloged as President's Personal File, 1933-1945 (NUCMC 75-562) and specifically those in file number 723. These include correspondence, clippings, and numerous cross-reference sheets and index cards which refer to additional correspondence to, from, or about Wheeler scattered in more than seventy other files within the Personal File, the President's Secretary's file (NUCMC 75-581), and the Official File (NUCMC 75-574)
