The MSU Library underwent some renovations this summer that would improve and update study spaces, increase the number of study spaces, increase electrical outlet access, and more.  The renovation also created the Research Alliance space to serve our students and campus community.

Unfortunately, due to some manufacturer delays, this work was not completed before the start of the semester and has left the library not looking its finest. We apologize for any stress the delays and changes have caused.  We are working hard to make sure that the MSU Library remains the safe and trusted space for group and quiet study.

You Asked. We Listened.

The Library is always asking our students what they need and want more of. As part of our You Asked, We Listened campaign, in summer/fall 2023, we delivered:

  • 9 NEW study rooms on the 2nd floor
  • More electrical outlets and access
  • More study spaces on the 4th floor

While these changes lost some favored study spaces, the Library has many quiet areas to study and is working on more improvements. To learn more about the changes we've made, check out our You Asked, We Listened page.

What's Next

We have lots of projects that we are working on to continue to improve your Library.

  • You've already seen some new paint on the 1st floor.  We will be adding fresh paint to areas like the stairwell.
  • Sensory-seeking space: for those who like more, we have a new sensory nook on the 1st floor that will be equipped with touch walls, fidget and game items, and more. (will be completed fall 2023)
  • Plants!  Students are always asking for more plants. We have more plants coming for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors.
  • Low sensory space: for those who like quiet and limited distractions, the 4th floor of the library is Your place.  We know it's bright and open.  We will be making some changes to reduce the noise and light as well as adding some new furniture to make this a more comfortable space for quiet study.  (coming spring 2024)
  • Art! More art. More diverse art. Student art.  Yes, we heard you.  We are painting spaces this fall so that we can get some featured art walls to showcase student and other art collections.
  • Signage: There is a lot that your Library has to offer, but it's not always easy to know where to find it.  New and updated signs are coming!

What's the Research Alliance?

The MSU Library is excited to join together with the Office of Research Development, Research Cyberinfrastructure, Undergraduate Scholars Program, and the Center for Faculty Excellence to form the Research Alliance. We are bringing expertise from across campus to one space, simplifying faculty and student access to services that support their research and teaching needs.

The new space, on the 3rd floor of the Library, offers centralized support services for faculty and students pursuing research.  As Montana's premier research university, this is an exciting opportunity for our campus.  Visit the Center for Faculty Excellence & the Research Alliance to learn more about how we can support you.
