Learning & Research Services Student Assistant

Student employees play an essential and important role in the Learning and Research Services (LRS) department. The MSU Library receives more foot traffic than nearly every other building on campus, and most often, the LRS student employees are the first people our visitors encounter during their visit to the library. Work primary occurs at the Service Desk in an often fast-paced environment, therefore patience, flexibility, and excellent customer service skills are a must. This role involves working with a variety of full-time library staff members and other part-time students, so the ability to work collaboratively is essential.
The library is staffed by student employees during all of our open hours, so this offers a variety of shifts to suit various schedules and personalities. Overall, applicants are expected to be able to work some flexible hours, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, as well as filling in when extra hours are available during finals, special events, or when your student colleagues need to trade shifts due to illness or conflicts.
Students must work at least 10 hours to maintain a position at the library and there is a maximum of 20 hours. Much of this is determined upon the schedule of the student and the needs of the Library.
Some of the primary responsibilities will include: Answering questions (all types!), checking materials and equipment in and out, shelving materials, maintaining supplies and servicing the library’s public printers. While performing these, and many other duties, our student employees serve as a friendly face by modeling attentive attitudes and going the extra-mile to provide assistance.
All student employees begin at a pay rate of $9.25.
