The Cataloging, Metadata, and Processing Unit (CMP) uses three different international cataloging standards to create records for items in our online catalog (CatSearch):  MARC, AACR2 and RDA.

MARC

Machine-Readable Cataloging code standards were created in the 1960s by Henriette Avram so that bibliographic records could be read by computers.  It is now an international coding standard.  MARC 21 is the current version.

AACR2

Anglo-American Cataloging Rules is a international library cataloging standard.  It outlines a way of producing access points like title, author and year, for a resource, for example a DVD.  It was first released in 1978.  The current version is AACR, 2nd edition.  It is no longer being updated.

RDA

Resource Description & Access is a library cataloging standard.  It outlines a way of producing access points like title, author and year, for a resource, for example a DVD.  It was released in 2010.
