Map Area Guide (Third Floor)
MSU Library's Map Collection Visual Finding Aid
Maps are organized primarily by scale and then by state. Use this color key to locate the scaled series you desire then find the state you are looking for labeled on the fronts of the map case drawers. Map area coverage is defined by dividing each state into a grid of quadrangles. Inside the top of each first state drawer you will find a quadrangle key for that state. Use this key to locate the area you are looking for by named quadrangle. The individual map quadrangles are arranged alphabetically inside the drawers.
States in the Northwest quarter of the U.S. are covered more broadly than other regions.
The following states are available in the 1:24,000 scale series: AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, NV, NM, ND, OR, SD, UT, WA, and WY.
For convenience, Montana quadrangle indexes are laminated on a table at one end of the map cases.
The USGS geologic maps and special publications file cabinets are located on the far (south) side of the map collection. This graphic displays the organization of those cabinets.
