  1. Who can borrow from Montana State University?

    Montana State University lends materials to libraries for their patrons. If you are an individual who needs material from MSU, please consult a librarian at your university or public library.

  3. How can a request be submitted to Montana State University?

    We will accept requests via OCLC (symbol: MZF), DocLine (symbol: MTUMOT), ALA, Fax, Ariel, E-Mail, or ILLiad via our web page. Go here to login to ILLiad. Please, no telephone requests.

  5. How can an ILLiad account be set up?

    We prefer that libraries making requests to borrow from our collections use the ILLiad system. Any institution that does not use OCLC or DOCLINE for its online requesting may submit requests for loans through an institutional ILLiad account. Please call our office at (406) 994-3161, e-mail or go here and then click on the First Time Users button to create a Borrowing Library Account. .

  9. What items in the Montana State University collection are non-circulating?
    • Any item from Special Collections (a copy might be an option)
    • All non-newspaper microfilm and current 5 years of newspapers on microfilm
    • Most recent 5 years periodicals
    • All language programs on CD
    • Reference (photocopy up to 30 pages can be provided)
    • Reserves (photocopy up to 30 pages can be provided)
    • Maps with Map Case as location
    • Review area items

  11. How much will it cost and what methods of payment are accepted?

    Domestic non-reciprocal loans and copies: $12.00 (DocLine charge is $10.00), Foreign loans: $25.00, Foreign copies: $15.00. IFM or EFTS preferred or invoiced monthly after ship date. Electronic deposit is accepted (please ask for instructions). Sorry, credit card payment NOT accepted. Service may be suspended for failure to pay for ILL loans or photocopies.

  13. What affiliations does Montana State University participate in?

    LVIS, BCR, BCR/AMIGOS, GIF (Global ILL Framework). We welcome reciprocal agreements.

  15. What are the loan policies?
    • No renewals allowed for any loan
    • 4 weeks use for books, microfilm, sound cassettes
    • 3 days use for videos/DVDs and periodicals (please return A/V in a box)
    • 1 week use for CDs (please return in a box)
    • Fiche–to-fiche copy is yours to keep (it will be stamped as such)

  17. What procedures need to be followed if an item is lost or damaged?

    The borrowing library is responsible for borrowed materials from the time they leave the supplying library until they have been received back. Loans may be restricted for "In Library Use Only" or restrictions on photocopying. An invoice will be sent for the replacement cost plus a $25.00 processing fee. In the case of a thesis or dissertation, an additional $8.00 binding fee will be added. Service may be suspended for failure to return items or pay for lost/damaged materials.

  19. Are rush requests accepted?

    Yes, we do provide rush request services at no extra charge. Please inform us that the item is a rush request.

  21. Are items provided internationally?

    MSU Libraries does provide materials internationally. We are members of the GIF (Global ILL Framework) Program.

  23. What shipping methods does Montana State University utilize?

    Photocopy: Ariel or Odyssey (preferred), E-mail attachment, Fax, U.S. Postal Service. The borrowing library is responsible for compliance with copyright law (Title 17, US Code). Loans: UPS, U.S. Postal Service, FedEx (borrowing library pays cost)
