The Library Commons is a collaborative effort to provide the campus community with the information, spaces, expertise and technological tools that contribute to the exploration, discovery, creation and dissemination of new knowledge and to the success of students and faculty.
Student research and study habits have transformed in recent years, and we recognize the ever-increasing need for technology-enabled workspaces, flexible furniture, and group study accommodation. Student assignments and research projects are also changing. Projects, papers, and presentations often include more graphic and media elements, and students seek the hardware, software, and expertise that support these efforts. Libraries have become more social as well, and Renne Library is an important and central meeting place on campus for both socialization and study. It is appropriate then, to continue fostering both a scholarly and social environment inside our library walls. We are implementing a multi-faceted commons environment that supports this dual nature of our library.
The Library Commons is currently in the final stages of planning. We are rearranging items on the 1st floor of the library and relocating parts of our collection to prepare for commons renovation and construction. We hope the Library Commons will be ready for public use in Fall 2011.
Key features the Commons will include:
- Flexible, comfortable furniture to accommodate both individual and group study
- Partially enclosed group study spaces
- Additional computer seating with improved workspaces
- Increased power outlets for easy access and convenient use
- Reconfiguration of key library service points for optimal ease of use
- Expert assistance for research needs and document creation
