Accession 00007 - Records of the Agricultural Engineering Dept., Montana State University, 1906-1977
Creator: Montana State University (Bozeman, Mont). Agricultural Engineering Dept.
Provenance Note: The records of the Agricultural Engineering department comprise accession numbers 00007, 71024, 72035, 72052, 73028, 74046, 75012, 76034, 76035, and 89050. Accession 72035 was donated by W.E. Larsen. Accession 72052 was donated by Ina Murdock. Accession 75012 was donated to Special Collections by C.C. Bowman.
Historical Note: The Agricultural Engineering department evolved under the College of Agriculture in 1920 to provide a combination of mechanical, civil, and electrical engineering skills to provide a broad understanding of farmer's problems and needs; prior to 1920 educational, research, and project activities in Agricultural Engineering was a function performed by the Experiment Station. In 1963, the Agricultural Engineering department transferred from the College of Agriculture to the College of Engineering. In 1987, Agricultural Engineering ceased to exist independently after its incorporation within the Civil Engineering department.
Under the Experiment Station, Agricultural Engineering staff conducted research and experiments on the Experiment Station farm and substations located around the state (e.g. Judith Basin near Moccasin, the Yellowstone Valley near Huntley, Northern Montana near Havre, and Bitter Root Valley near Corvallis). Agricultural Engineering staff also published bulletins providing the results of their experimental work. Departmental staff also provided instruction to students of the College of Agriculture. After the department of Agricultural Engineering formed under the College of Agriculture in 1920, departmental staff continued their work with the Experiment Station, conducting research and experiments as well as bulletin publications. The department developed a series of courses to coordinate the sciences of agronomy, soils, mechanics, electricity, hydraulics, thermodynamics, and structures in order to address mechanical and engineering difficulties found on farms. Courses for the Bachelor's of Science degree included irrigation, drainage, farm power and machinery, as well as farm buildings and structures. Beginning in 1962 the department implemented graduate courses in Agricultural Engineering. No notable changes occurred to the department with its shift from the College of Agriculture to the College of Engineering in 1963 until the department was combined with Civil Engineering in 1987.
Over the course of the department's history, the Agricultural Engineering department had at least four department heads: Harvey E. Murdock (1920-1941), Olaf W. Monson (1949-1961), Charles C. Bowman (1961-1973), and William E. Larsen (1973-1987).
Content Description Note: The Agricultural Engineering department records are an extensive set of files from multiple accessions donated over the course of several years. Organization of the materials was haphazard and most accessions lacked inventories to provide a point of reference. When possible the folder titles provided by the department have been used and denoted by quotations. In order to present the records in a manner that provides an accurate representation of the department's activities, arrangement of the materials in this collection have been organized by genre, then alphabetically, and finally chronologically. Topics and activities represented are standard operational records, special project documentation, faculty teaching and research, and photographs of both personnel and working projects. Charles C. Bowman, Olaf W. Monson, and Harvey E. Murdock created the bulk of the records within this collection; however, other individuals associated with the department are also represented. The records retained in this collection do not represent the entirety of the Agricultural Engineering department's personnel but are the only materials currently known to exist in the University Archives.

Series 1: Administrative Records, 1910-1977
Materials in this series have been divided into subseries according to record type, arranged alphabetically, and then chronologically. Materials in this series date prior to the department's official creation and span the administrative periods of H.E. Murdock, O.W. Monson, C.C. Bowman, and W.E. Larsen. These records provide insight into the correspondence, finances, personnel, and day-to-day activities of the department.
This series contains signed letters from Congressmen Mike Mansfield, John Melcher, Lee Metcalf, and Dick Shoup.

Series 1; Subseries 1: Correspondence - General , 1960-1977
This subseries pertains to the general business of the Agricultural Engineering department. The bulk of materials in this subseries were created under Charles C. Bowman's administration. Some correspondence to various conferences and seminars hosted or attended by the departments staff, other correspondence pertains to the American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), day-to-day activities, prospective employees. The earliest correspondence represented in this subseries contains letterpress copies of letters dating back to 1884, but their relationship to the future establishment of the department is unclear.
This subseries also includes letters signed by Congressional Representatives Dick Shoup and John Melcher, as well as letters signed by Senators Lee Metcalf and Mike Mansfield. The folders pertaining to these individuals include materials previously removed from the creator's context by an unknown individual. It is likely that these letters originated from Charles C. Bowman's correspondence as all are addressed to him. Additional correspondence signed by Representative Shoup and Senator Mansfield have been relocated from subseries two to for inclusion with the congressmen's correspondence folders to maintain consistency.

Series 3: Research & Project files, 1909-1973
This series pertains to the research and project files of departmental personnel. These records provide a snapshot into topics under investigation by several of the department's engineers; however, the bulk of the material pertains to research and projects overseen by Charles C. Bowman, Olaf W. Monson, and Harvey E. Murdock. The research and project materials range from correspondence associated with a given project, to project data, notes, and reports. Research and project interests range from farm machinery, irrigation, drainage, to harvesting and yields, to farm mechanics and farm structures. The research conducted by the department throughout Montana at the various experiment station branches (e.g. Moccasin, Huntley, Havre, and Miles City). Other locals for research include the Gallatin Canyon, Beaverhead County, Cascade County, Dawson County Meagher County, Deerlodge County, & Silverbow County. Additional counties encompassed in the research and projects are Flathead, Granite, Madison, Missoula, Pondera, Powell, Ravalli, Stillwater, and Teton.
Research and projects pursued by the Agricultural Engineering department was cooperative in nature, often utilizing multiple individuals from within the department on an individual project, and on occasion crossing departmental or state boundaries for collaboration. It should be noted that some projects were begun under one individual and completed by another; therefore, the research and project files have been listed under the initial project leaders to preserve context and content of the research.
This series is broken down in to subseries for each grouping of projects pertaining to a particular member associated with the Agricultural Engineering department. The subseries are organized alphabetically according to surname, and then by given. Within each subseries, the folders organized alphabetically and then numerically according to the research or project's title ignoring the introductory articles "A" and "The." Materials pertaining to each research or project have been kept within each group and organized alphabetically then chronologically as needed.
This series does contain some photographs that pertain to individual projects and have been left with these projects to prevent disturbing the context of the research or project. Photographs within folders have been sequentially numbered and identified by the pound sign (#). Photographs #1 to #9 are located in subseries 2. Photographs #10 to #38 are located in subseries 10.
This series contains the oversized materials that have been separated. The separation is denoted by a double asterisk (**) next to the folder from which material was removed. Please refer to the separation notice in the designated folder for a description of the relocated material as well as its new location.
