National Forests in Northeastern California

Research files and reports arranged geographically and chronologically documenting activities in National Forests administered by the United States Forest Service in northeastern California, including Lassen National Forest, Modoc National Forest, and Plumas National Forest, 1933-1993. The records especially well document the activities in Lassen National Forest and have been arranged according to localities within the forest, including a vegetation exclosure for the study of Purshia tridentata in Blacks Mountain Experimental Forest, Burgess Spring Experimental Range, and Harvey Valley Grazing Allotment. Hormay authored many of the reports, but these files also include reports by several of his colleagues. There are also photographs with accompanying plastic overlays and descriptions in this series that document selected range, condition, and trend plots of vegetation that Hormay established in the Harvey Valley Grazing Allotment, 1954-1977. The files for Project W46R document a cooperative study between the Pacific Southwest Forest and Range Experiment Station and the California Department of Fish and Game. Hormay acted as a project leader for the project to develop cultural methods, including artificial reseeding of Purshia tridentata and other vegetation species, to restore game rangelands in Modoc and Lassen counties of California, with a small amount of materials related to a similar follow-up study.
