Collection 2292 - Ole Adolf Anderson Yellowstone National Park Photographs, ca. 1900

Creator: Anderson, Ole Adolf

Provenance Note: Glass plate and nitrate negatives created by Ole Anderson were purchased by Special Collections from Jack and Susan Davis of Bozeman, Montana, on September 1, 1994.

Historical Note: Ole Adolf Anderson was born in Sweden on May 18, 1857. He came to the United States in 1880 and likely worked on the railroad until 1883. Sometime during that year he arrived in Yellowstone National Park and established a specimen coating business at Mammoth Hot Springs. Anderson would take small objects and place them in the hot water basins at Mammoth to be coated with the minerals contained in the water. The resulting curios were then sold as souvenirs to Yellowstone tourists. At first he sold the curiosities out of a tent at the base of the Mammoth Hot Spring terraces, but eventually he built a frame store and residence between the Cottage Hotel and the U. S. Commissioner's residence. Anderson's activities were officially recognized by the Park when he was granted a permit to continue his operations in 1889. In 1890 he purchased a home in Helena, Montana, and he married Christina E. Granlund in 1891. The couple had three sons: Arthur, Roy, and Carl. Although he was licensed by the Park to only sell his coated specimens, Anderson purchased cameras and equipment shortly after completing his store building in 1896 and may have intended to compete with F.J. Haynes, the offical photographer of Yellowstone. It is not known if Ole offered for sale any of his subsequent Yellowstone images, but he produced many large format glass plate negatives, stereoview negatives, and nitrate negatives of wildlife, Mammoth Hot Springs, and other Yellowstone features prior to 1908. During that year Anderson sold his specimen business and moved his family to Helena where he died on August 15, 1915.

Content Description Note: The Ole Anderson photographs are primarily images of wildlife and buildings in and around the Mammoth Hot Springs area. A few images are of the Anderson family, other Park locations, and possibly buildings near Helena. Original captions for the photographs are unknown, as the writing on the deteriorating paper envelopes which were present during processing rarely matched the subject of the enclosed negative. On those rare occasions when the caption did match, the words are presented within quotation marks in the inventory. The negatives have been sequentially numbered and divided into six groups: #1-57 are 5 x 7" glass plate negatives; #58-109 are 4 x 5" glass plate negatives; #110-137 are 3 1/4 x 6 1/2" stereoview glass plate negatives; #138-232 are paired 3 1/4" nitrate negatives linked by metal channel clips to produce stereoviews; #233-255 are single frame 3 1/4" negatives which may have once had a matching stereoview image; #256-263 are larger format single frame nitrate negatives. All of the glass plate negatives, #1-137, have been used to produce the positive contact prints which have been placed in box 5. All of the nitrate negatives, #138-263, were developed on film produced before 1903 when manufacturers introduced gelatin coating to reduce curling, and many are curled too tightly to produce a clear print. These negatives, located in box 4, are unavailable for resarch use until they have been digitally scanned. Due to an error when the collection was first inventoried in 1993, images #1-137 were numbered according to a series of 35mm copy negatives made from the contact prints. These 35mm copy negatives were then used to identify the originals without regard to any subject order. As a result, the sequential numbers assigned during the processing of this collection follow no discernable pattern of arrangement beyond physical format.

Restrictions: All original nitrate negatives are unavailable for research use until the production of digital surrogates is scheduled.
