Collection 1505 - Isabel Haynes Papers, 1886-1992
Creator: Haynes, Isabel Nauerth
Provenance Note: Personal and corporate business papers created or collected by Jack and Isabel Haynes were dontated to Montana State University by Mrs. Haynes in August, 1977. Almost all of papers were processed under several different accession numbers during the early 1990s and assigned numbers 1500, 1501, 1502, 1503, and 1504. This collection of papers was the last to be processed and represent the contents of several filing cabinets maintained by Mrs. Haynes up to the time of her death in 1993.
Historical Note: Isabel Nauerth Haynes was born October 25, 1899 in Traer, Iowa. She attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1921 with a teaching certificate. In 1922, Isabel began her forty five year association with Yellowstone National Park taking a summer job with Yellowstone Camps and Lodge Company. She eventually spent three years as manager of Roosevelt Lodge after completing a resort management program in California. During her employment in Yellowstone, Isabel met Jack Ellis Haynes whom she married in 1930. Isabel became an integral part of the Haynes company. During the winter months, she recruited Minnesota college students looking to spend their summers in the park and managed the Yellowstone stores during the season. Isabel and Jack's only child, Lida, was born in 1932, but died suddenly in a car accident in 1952. As a gift to the youth of Montana, the Haynes Foundation was created by Jack and Isabel in 1958 as a way to provide scholarships to the state's Universities. After her husband's death in 1962, Isabel assumed full control of the Haynes Picture shops, running them until selling out to Hamilton Stores in 1969. Mrs. Haynes was an active citizen in the Bozeman community and the state of Montana . She was honored with many awards including the MSU Blue and Gold award, honorary doctorates from M. S. U. and Carroll College, and the Bozeman Chamber of Commerce's Sperry award. Isabel Haynes passed away in Bozeman April 7, 1993.
Content Description Note: The Isabel Haynes papers consist of family papers, diaries, letters, and memorabilia produced or exchanged by various Haynes family members and collected by Isabel Haynes. Subjects include Haynes family experiences in the Minneapolis, Minnesota public schools, the University of Minnesota, and interactions with families and friends in Minneapolis, Bozeman, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. Also represented in the collection are correspondence files pertaining to the operations of the various Haynes Inc. business ventures in Yellowstone National Park. A third series of topical newspaper clipping files collected by Mrs. Haynes demonstrates some of her fields of interest and activities. All files are intially alphabetically arranged and thereafter chronologically.

Haynes Family papers, 1886-1969
Letters, diaries, memorabilia, and other documents produced or collected by Haynes family members. Correspondence shows the inter workings of a family brought together in a business venture, beginning with letters from Levi Haynes to F. Jay at the start up of the Haynes Photographic Studio followed by excerpts of communication between F. J. and his wife Lily. Early letters describe F. Jay Haines' travels at the beginning of his career, and later correspondence relates to his family's ventures in Yellowstone. While in the park, F. J.'s daughter kept journals of her life living at Mammoth. Jack Haynes ealry life is represented from school work examples spanning from elementary school until his graduation from the University of Minnesota. There is a great amount of correspondence between Jack and Isabel from the years of their marriage and becoming business partners. There is a great wealth of information on the Minneapolis area; both from when the business was located in the Twin Cities and afterwards when Isabel made recruiting trips looking for seasonal workers; and about society circles of Bozeman, Montana. Also of great interest is the growth of daughter Lida Haynes, represented by her class work and letters done in childhood through letters written during her brief adult years. There are descriptions of travel, luxury purchases, and eventual accolades for community work. In most cases original order was maintained except in those instances where loose materials were topically arranged.
